If you’ve ever stood in front of a fire detection panel layout and wondered why some zones use smoke detectors and others use heat detectors, you’re not alone. It’s one of the more common questions we field at Safety Link Marine, usually from vessel owners who assume one type of detector should work everywhere onboard. It doesn’t — and using the wrong type in the wrong space is one of the quieter compliance gaps we come across during inspections across UAE vessels.

Let’s clear up the confusion.

The Basic Difference

Smoke detectors sense particles in the air produced by combustion — essentially, smoke. They’re built to catch a fire in its earliest stage, often before flames are even visible, which makes them ideal for spaces where early warning matters most.

Heat detectors respond to a rise in temperature, either reaching a fixed threshold or detecting a rapid rate of temperature increase. They don’t react to smoke at all — only heat.

Neither one is “better” in a general sense. They’re built for different environments, and marine vessels typically need both, just in different zones.

Where Smoke Detectors Make Sense

Smoke detectors work best in areas where:

  • The air is relatively clean under normal conditions
  • Early detection is critical, such as crew cabins, corridors, and control rooms
  • There’s minimal dust, steam, or exhaust that could trigger false alarms

Because they catch fires early, smoke detectors are usually the go-to choice for occupied living and working spaces where getting an early warning could mean the difference between a small incident and a serious one.

Where Heat Detectors Make Sense

Heat detectors are better suited to:

  • Engine rooms and generator spaces, where exhaust, dust, and steam are a normal part of daily operation
  • Galleys, where cooking naturally produces smoke and steam that would set off a smoke detector constantly
  • Areas with high ambient humidity or particulate levels

In these spaces, a smoke detector would likely cause frequent false alarms, which — ironically — often leads crews to start ignoring the alarm altogether. That’s a much bigger safety risk than a slightly slower detection method. A heat detector avoids this problem by ignoring the everyday steam and dust, and only responding to a genuine, dangerous temperature rise.

What Happens When the Wrong Type Is Installed

We walked onto vessels where a smoke detector was installed in an engine room “because it seemed like the more sensitive option.” In practice, this backfires two ways. First, false alarms become so frequent that crew start disabling or ignoring the system, which defeats its entire purpose. Second, the detector isn’t actually suited to detect the kind of fire risk that space presents, since engine room fires often start with heat before there’s significant visible smoke in that environment.

The reverse problem happens too — heat detectors installed in cabins or offices, where they’re simply too slow to respond because a fire has to grow large enough to raise ambient temperature before triggering an alert. By the time a heat detector fires in that setting, a smoke detector would have already given the warning minutes earlier.

What UAE Vessel Standards Expect

Marine fire detection layouts are generally required to follow SOLAS and vessel classification guidelines, which specify detector types by compartment based on fire risk and typical environmental conditions. This isn’t just a suggestion — auditors specifically check whether the detector type matches the space it’s installed in, not just whether a detector exists at all.

A Quick Way to Think About It

If the space is normally clean air with people present, lean smoke detection. If the space naturally produces heat, steam, dust, or exhaust as part of daily operation, lean heat detection. Anything in between — like galleys or laundry areas — often benefits from a combination approach or specialized multi-sensor detectors.

A Note on Mixed-Use Spaces

Some areas onboard don’t fit neatly into either category — a workshop that’s usually clean but occasionally produces welding fumes, for example. In these cases, the right answer often depends on how the space is actually used day to day, not just its label on a deck plan. This is exactly the kind of judgment call that benefits from an experienced technician walking the space in person rather than working purely off drawings.

Getting Your Layout Checked

If your vessel’s detection system was installed years ago, or you’re not entirely sure which detector type sits in which zone, it’s worth having it reviewed. This is a fast assessment, and correcting a mismatched layout is usually far simpler than dealing with the aftermath of a missed detection or a system nobody trusts anymore because of constant false alarms.
